What is
Reiki?

A gentle introduction to universal life energy

Universal
life energy

Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive energy practice rooted in traditional Japanese healing traditions. The word itself — Rei (universal) and Ki (life energy) — points to the animating force that flows through all living things.

Developed by Mikao Usui in early twentieth century Japan, Reiki is passed down through a lineage of teachers and practitioners. Matthew is trained in the Usui Shiki Ryoho tradition — one of the most widely practised and respected lineages in the world — and offers in-person sessions from his practice in Georgetown, Ontario.

During a session, a practitioner channels this energy through light touch or by working just above the body. The aim is not to impose change, but to support the client's own natural ability to return to a state of balance and ease.

Reiki is offered as complementary care — working alongside, not in place of, any medical treatment. It does not diagnose conditions, and no specific outcomes are promised.

"Reiki supports the body's natural ability to restore balance."

What to expect in your
60-minute session

1
A gentle welcome

We begin with a short conversation — a chance to share anything relevant and ask any questions. There is no script, and no pressure.

2
Fully clothed, at rest

You remain fully clothed throughout and lie comfortably on a treatment table. There is nothing to do — simply rest and allow the session to unfold.

3
Light touch or hands above

Reiki is offered with gentle, non-invasive touch or with hands held just above the body. Matthew will always work within your comfort.

4
Your own experience

People experience Reiki very differently — warmth, tingling, deep relaxation, or simply quiet. There is no right or wrong way to receive it.

The Five Reiki
Principles

The Gokai — five guiding principles taught by Mikao Usui — form the ethical and spiritual heart of Reiki practice. They are not commandments, but gentle daily intentions.

今日だけは
Just for today,
do not anger
心配するな
Just for today,
do not worry
感謝して
Be grateful
for everything
精進して
Devote yourself
to your work
親切にして
Be kind
to all beings

— The Gokai, as taught by Mikao Usui

You might be
wondering...

Do I need to believe in Reiki for it to work?

No. Reiki does not require belief — only openness. Many people who come to Still Point Reiki arrive curious but sceptical, and find value in simply having a dedicated hour to rest and slow down.

Is Reiki a religious practice?

No. Reiki is a spiritual practice in the broadest sense but holds no specific religious belief and is welcoming of people of all faiths and none.

Can Reiki replace medical treatment?

No, and this is important. Reiki is complementary care — it works alongside, not instead of, any medical or mental health treatment. Always consult your doctor for medical concerns.

How many sessions will I need?

There is no set answer. Some people find a single session meaningful. Others return regularly over time. Matthew will never pressure you into more sessions — it is entirely your choice.
